It is really hard to know the exact breed of natural dark sheepskins. In a herd of 5000 white Romney sheep occasionally a lamb is born who is black, brown or grey. It must be a very ancient recessive wool colour gene. There are ancient breeds that are always darker colours. In New Zealand these natural black sheep are still rare and in the minority. Most farmers want their flock to be white.
